JOHN SCHAEFER

FULLERTON CITY COUNCIL

DISTRICT 1 - CANDIDATE

John Schaefer is a native Californian who has spent his life serving others and strengthening the communities he calls home. Raised in Orange County, John attended J.F. Kennedy High School in La Palma before continuing his education at Fullerton College, California State University Long Beach, and the University of Southern California.

John and his wife have proudly called Fullerton home for over 41 years. They have raised three daughters here and are now blessed with four grandchildren. John enjoys staying active through CrossFit, racquetball, and riding his mountain bike on the Fullerton Loop. Their home is also shared with two cats, a dog, and even a tortoise—just one more reflection of a full and grounded family life.

John brings over 40 years of public service experience in municipal government, including an extensive career in law enforcement. He served with the Cypress and Seal Beach Police Departments and went on to lead as Chief of Police in both Placentia and San Marino. He concluded his public sector career as City Manager for San Marino, where he oversaw city finances, infrastructure, and operations for a full-service city—including police, fire, public works, planning, recreation, and administrative services.

John’s commitment to service extends well beyond his professional career. He volunteered for 19 years with the Orange County Probation Department, working with youth at Juvenile Hall, and currently serves as a Chaplain with the Fullerton Police Department.

His community involvement includes service on the Fullerton Citizens’ Infrastructure Review Committee, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Placentia/Yorba Linda and Cypress Board of Directors, and as a consultant to the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) on community-oriented policing. He has also taught as an adjunct Criminal Justice instructor at both Golden West College and Fullerton College.

John has been an active member of the Rotary Clubs of San Marino and Cypress and has served on the League of California Cities Transportation, Communication & Public Works Committee.
